Explaining Low-Emissivity Glass and Gas Fills

It’s common for replacement windows to come with insulating components, as the demand for energy-efficient products continues to rise. Among the parts of an energy-efficient window, the glass contributes the most to its overall thermal performance.

At Erin Isle Construction, we offer windows with gas-filled low emissivity glass. We explain how they work to keep your home cozy in today’s post.

Defining Low Emissivity

This refers to a material’s ability to emit an amount of energy based on its surrounding environment. The lower the emissivity of a material, the better it is at keeping your home cool. When it comes to windows, they radiate an amount of heat depending on  their level of emissivity and the temperature of their surfaces. So when you lessen their emissive qualities, you also increase their thermal performance.

Defining Gas Fills

An energy-efficient window replacement typically comes with gas-filled glass. Inert gases, such as argon and krypton, are used to fill glass panes to improve a window’s thermal efficiency. They achieve this by lessening the amount of heat transfer across the window. You can tell if a window is filled with gas by checking the specifications usually found along the bottom inside the window’s track. It features two small holes along the spacer; one where the gas enters the unit and one where it leaves.
